MASTER THE SPIRIT SHOUT!
Kime part 2
A pathetic trait of most modern martial art schools is the feeble, patronizing grunts each of their students pass for spirit shouts. The casual "kiaaaaa's and huyaaaa those students mechanically mouth demonstrate how little their instructors know of Kiai & Aiki. And since so few modern martial artists understand the importance of the true spirit shout, its use has all but disappeared from sport competition and from several traditional dojos.
The spirit shout is one of the most valuable tools for developing Kime and subsequently, Kiai and Aiki. The well trained hard stylist will explode with a deafening roar at the crucial point of Kime, the point of contact with his/her target. The shout will erupt from his abdomen, ensuring Haragei & Kokyu Chikara, and it will help him/her focus that simultaneous burst from all their muscles, essential for generating the crushing force all martial artist desire.
The soft stylist spirit shout is different but no less important. Instead of a sharp, piercing scream, they will emit a low, accelerating growl from deep within their Hara. It will grow in intensity as the energy flows through its circle, climaxing as the aiki turns against and dominates the opponent.
In both instances, the spirit shout is a tool; it's an audible device the warrior uses to coordinate and focus his physical, mental & spiritual energies. If you like, think of it as a lens, or a set of lenses, that focus three different portions of the light spectrum onto a single point. The single, intense, cutting spearhead is Kiai, and it is Aiki,……..crisp and sharp to the point…….Always!
Aiki:A united Spirit. The Spiritual principle of destroying an adversary's will to fight, or the physical act of dominating an adversary by harmonizing with his force and redirecting it.
Haragei:The Physical Art of controlling and moving from one's center. Mental and synonymous with intuition & courage.
Kime: Focus – Physical, mental or spiritual……
Kokyu Chikara: Breath Power. Internal power as opposed to physical strength
